How to Clean Colored Contact Lenses

June 13, 2010

Cleaning color contact lenses is done the same way as cleaning basic clear contact lenses. The supplier of your contact lenses will likely show you how to clean and care for your new lenses during your fitting exam, but the steps for cleaning most types of lenses is as follows.

Step One – Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. Your hands come in contact with many types of germs and bacteria during the course of the day and it is important to wash your hands prior to touching contact lenses to avoid transmitting contaminants to your eyes.

Step Two – Remove one contact lens from the case and place it in the palm of your hand. Add several drops of sterile saline solution or the contact cleansing solution your doctor recommended to the palm of your hand so that your contact is floating in the solution.

Step Three – Using the index finger of the opposite hand gently move the lens back and forth across the palm of your hand. Using a circular motion may tear your lens, so be very gentle during this process. After several seconds flip the contact over and repeat with the opposite side of the lens.

Step Four – Carefully rinse the contact lens by squeezing the solution bottle so a slow stream of solution rinses away the solution used during rubbing.

Step Five – Repeat with second contact lens.

Remember to always store your colored contact lenses by soaking them in solution within a contact lens case. Be sure the caps to the case are secured properly as the solution will evaporate quickly and dry the contacts out if not sealed tight. Use a new contact lens case every month or two and throw the old one out.

Repeating the cleaning steps after prolonged storage of contacts will ensure your colored contacts feel fresh when you wear them. You can even rinse them before putting them back in if you want.
